Temps around these parts are now barely breaking 70 with clouds, when so recently we broke the all time record with 104, quite the change on a usually reliable sunny 80's for July and August. As such a perfect day for a beach hike that might otherwise be done in Winter.
Anderson Island is in the South Sound, serviced by the only island ferry route **not** run by Washington State, hence making it the most quiet of all puget islands - and the most remote, having the power off for over two months this last winter due a cut cable.
This is Otso Point, a shy two miles from the Ferry Dock, best at lower tides if one wishes to keep the shoes, and thighs, dry.
This sturdy little vessel is visiting the small dab of wild at Eagle Island, probably an easy swim in the August waters of the South Sound.
Though I'm known for misidentifying the zoological and the botanical this is most likely a Great Blue Heron.
The Pierce County Ferry 'Christine Anderson' running mostly hourly. For a guidebook dig up a copy of the out of print Manning/Spring classic 'Walks and Hikes on the Beaches around Puget Sound'. The book includes a legal primer on beachfront access in Washington State - and quoteable advice, such as "Evil spirts, so wise men said of old, cannot cross water". Wise words those, most certainly as always, from Mr. Manning.
This is the McNeil Island Prison, built by the Feds and now in State hands - most likely not forever. In the meantime home to a few evil spirtes transported by government barge, and tons of wildlife.
